Blue Springs Kayaking Tour - Closest Manatee Kayaking to Orlando

1.5 - 2 Hours

Ages 6+

No Pets

My kayak tours are capped at 6 kayaks per tour, perfect for families and smaller groups!

Blue Springs is the closest spot for manatee kayaking near Orlando, just about an hour from the airport! Each year, record numbers of manatees (over 600) migrate to the warmer 72-degree waters during the colder months. Join me for a paddle on Florida’s longest river, the St. Johns, as we search for these incredible creatures alongside other wildlife like alligators, turtles, and a variety of birds.

From November to March, during manatee season, the Blue Springs run transforms into a manatee sanctuary and is closed to swimmers and paddlers. My sit-on-top kayaks offer the best view of these gentle giants as they glide by.

When you put in Blue Springs State park into your maps app, go past the entrance of the park, do not enter the park, go to the end of the dirt road where there is a boat ramp. That is our launch location for the tour.

Why Kayak at Blue Springs?

Blue Springs is a natural spring that feeds into the St. Johns River, Florida’s longest river. The spring’s crystal-clear, 72-degree water provides the perfect setting for kayaking, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of Orlando. Whether you’re a seasoned kayaker or a first-timer, the calm waters and lush surroundings make it an ideal destination.

The Highlight: Manatees

One of the main reasons visitors flock to Blue Springs is the chance to see manatees up close. During the colder months, typically November through March, hundreds of manatees migrate to the spring’s warm waters, creating a truly magical experience. While the spring itself is closed to paddlers during manatee season to protect these gentle giants, the St. Johns River offers excellent opportunities to spot them as they swim near your kayak.

What to Expect on a Kayaking Trip

When you join a Blue Springs kayaking tour, you’ll embark on an adventure that’s equal parts relaxing and thrilling. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  1. Wildlife Encounters
Beyond manatees, the St. Johns River is teeming with life. As you paddle, you may spot alligators sunning themselves on the riverbanks, turtles lounging on logs, and a wide variety of birds, from majestic herons to colorful kingfishers.

  2. Scenic Views
The river is lined with lush vegetation, towering cypress trees, and serene backwaters. The tranquil surroundings make it easy to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.

  3. Sit-on-Top Kayaks
I provide sit-on-top kayaks for better visibility. These kayaks are beginner-friendly and perfect for spotting wildlife beneath the surface. This provides better visibility and less glare on the water.

  4. Educational Insights
A guided tour often includes fascinating details about the park’s ecosystem, the St. Johns River, and the manatees themselves. This is a great way to learn about the area’s natural history while enjoying the adventure.

Tips for Kayaking at Blue Springs

  1. Best Time to Visit
If you’re hoping to see manatees, plan your visit during the winter months. Early morning tours often offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities.

  2. Dress Comfortably
Wear clothing that can get wet and bring a hat, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. In cooler months, consider layering to stay warm.

  3. Respect Wildlife
Always maintain a safe distance from manatees and other wildlife. Avoid making loud noises or sudden movements that could disturb them.

Beyond Kayaking

Blue Springs National Park offers more than just kayaking. If you have time, consider exploring its hiking trails, which wind through the park’s lush landscapes. The spring itself is a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling outside of manatee season. For those looking to stay overnight, the park has a campground with modern amenities, making it a great base for your Florida adventure.
